The creatures had clearly seen us before they'd set foot inside the cavern, so there was little point in following Sniffix in search of a hiding place. They moved in twos and threes, flowing around and between the jumble of dragon bones like shadows cast by falling leaves. Except these leaves spread out through the chamber to close in on us from all sides. Their movement was deliberate, coordinated, and deceptively calm. I didn't know why they hadn't tried to see what our insides looked like yet, but I knew from experience how very, very dead we'd be once they decided to do so.
I glanced around for a weapon, but the closest thing to it was the torch at my feet. I snatched it up and brandished it like a club, but my brief hope that these hunters of the dark would suffer a fear of fire was quickly dashed. They squinted their eyes a bit, but continued forward unconcerned by my display.
"What in the name of Balthas' sweaty backside are those things?"
Jaren moved to stand next to me. His face was pale and his hands shook a bit, but he held a large rock in each fist and he hadn't soiled his trousers, so I bumped my mental estimation of the man up a few notches as I turned back to the sea of death that prowled closer by the second.
"Bad news."
The pack of monsters closed in. I had no magic, no weapon, nowhere to hide, and no friends to fight with me. I was so drained from the past few days that all I felt was a cold resignation at the thought of meeting such a pointless and lonely end down here in the bowels of the earth, but I took a stance and got ready to bash in a bat face or two on my way down.
"Enough!" A loud, angry voice rang out behind me. I shot a glance over my shoulder to see Caspin leaning through the hole into the cavern. He swung out and slid down to the floor with a dozen of his soldiers right on his heels, the fragments of dragon bones chiming a cheerful welcome with every step they took. Caspin stepped onto the cavern floor and marched toward the chidoran without missing a step. He didn't have his weapons drawn.
"We both know you'll not break the truce over two thin prisoners. Now where is your Elder? I've little patience for waiting."
"I am here, elf meat," a squeaking hiss sounded from the tunnel by the skull as the huge albino bat that I'd last seen punching his way through a wall of ice stepped into the torchlight.
The brute stalked into the room like a tiger on the hunt, if tigers walked upright, cleared seven feet tall, and looked at the world through eyes that flashed with a keen and cunning intellect.
"You missed your mark," he said as he pointed a clawed finger over our shoulders. "This is not good."
Caspin's gaze traveled up to the hole several feet up on the wall behind us as he scowled in irritation.
